Among the Churches

GRANITE CITY, ILLINOIS (First Church).—First Church of Christ, Scientist, Granite City, was dedicated on Sunday, July 21, 1940. This is one church in the city that is not indebted. In a city of installment buying, almost universal personal indebtedness, and heavy municipal bond issues, it is a pleasure to salute a church free from all debt. The Christian Science church was constructed several years ago, but it was not dedicated until it was free from debt. In numbers its membership is not large. All the more honor to them for building such a fine church and then paying for it in full before they dedicated it!

The building is large, modern, well appointed, inspiring in appearance, and withal a credit to the city and to its congregation and its faith. Walking between his home and office the editor goes by that church many times each month and invariably enjoys an uplift at beholding it. Only one or two of the members have identified themselves to the editor. We don't know who they are personally, but by their deeds we know them. Personal self-effacement seems to be one of their characteristics. For that we hail them. At the dedication we congratulate them.—Press-Record (Editorial).
