I have for a long time desired to write a testimony in gratitude for Christian Science. I have always enjoyed others' testimonies, and derived much help and inspiration from them, but the thought often came to me that I did not have enough of value to share with others. I realize now, however, that I have something of great value, for I have had continual proofs of God's loving care and protection. Several years ago, two friends and I were in what appeared to be a very serious accident. Our car was demolished, but we, who at that time were all students in a Christian Science Sunday School, were unharmed. This was to me a very definite proof that God is caring for His children always.
I am very grateful for the Lesson-Sermons as given in the Christian Science Quarterly, and for the subjects that Mrs. Eddy had the wisdom and foresight to select. During the years that I studied the Lessons in the Sunday school, I did not overcome the false belief that some of the subjects were too difficult to grasp—particularly the one entitled "Ancient and Modern Necromancy, alias Mesmerism and Hypnotism, Denounced." Despite my teachers' careful thought and preparations with this Lesson, I was still unable to see the necessity of studying this subject. I am now glad to say that I realize the value of learning that we must be alert to the claims of animal magnetism—the unreal activity of mortal mind, human will. Mrs. Eddy tells us in Science and Health (pp. 273, 274), "Science shows that material, conflicting mortal opinions and beliefs emit the effects of error at all times, but this atmosphere of mortal mind cannot be destructive to morals and health when it is opposed promptly and persistently by Christian Science." No form of error can possibly touch us if we oppose it "promptly and persistently" with the understanding of Truth and Love.
I experienced an instantaneous healing while studying the Lesson on "Probation after Death." I read the Lesson on Monday morning and was trying to see the unreality of a cold. While reading I kept thinking, "This Lesson doesn't seem to fit my need." During the day it seemed quite a struggle to carry on my household duties. That evening a friend came to see me. We studied the Lesson thoroughly, and I found that the truths stated were a direct blessing, for much was unfolded to my consciousness. All erroneous suggestions concerning a cold were completely forgotten long before we finished studying. Our Leader says in "The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany" (p. 210), "Beloved Christian Scientists, keep your minds so filled with Truth and Love, that sin, disease, and death cannot enter them." I am grateful that I now know that by earnestly studying the Lesson, whatever the subject may be, we can be helped in solving any problem.
