When I was about eleven years old I joined a church
When I was about eleven years old I joined a church. I had a sincere desire to be a Christian, but had only a vague idea of how to go about it. As the years passed I failed to acquire any more knowledge on the subject, although I faithfully attended Sunday school and church.
In the meantime I came to a large city in the North, and took a medical nurse's training. Years of nursing followed, and I became very depressed, even morbid. I had acquired several physical ailments, from which I could get no relief, had seen that the doctors' efforts were often fruitless, and had a terrible fear of death, for which I thought I was unprepared. My frequent prayer was, "O Lord, lead me that I may know Thee aright."
While nursing, I heard of three outstanding healings in Christian Science, which could not be doubted. At one place where I nursed, the Christian Science Sentinel was brought to the house every week, and I read it through. Added to this, I had a well-loved cousin who was a devoted student of Christian Science, and used to write to me about it. It seemed to me that if all these people had been healed there was hope for me, so I went to a Christian Science Reading Room and purchased a copy of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. Then I found the name of a practitioner, and visited him. I do not remember the words he used, but like a light I saw that here was a religion I wanted, and that God is ever-present Love, from whom I had never been separated. At first the pages of Science and Health seemed to me to be filled with meaningless phrases, but I persisted because of the light I had glimpsed, and after several months certain sentences stood out with beautiful meaning. I found too that I had been healed of one ailment. Since then, countless healings have come to me, physical and mental, and I have seen many other beautiful healings. A reversal of a belief that a certain person was dishonest was one of the happiest experiences I have had, because it left me with a sense of freedom, and of love and kindness toward him. After a few years' study I had the joyful privilege of class instruction, followed by membership in The Mother Church. I am grateful also for membership in a branch church.
