Understanding Immortality Now

Christ Jesus demonstrated immortal life. His overcoming of death for himself followed naturally his demonstrations over sin, disease, and death for others, whereby he proved the inseparable relationship of God and man. Jesus understood, applied, and proved the Science of spiritual being.

The third chapter of John recounts a conversation between Jesus and a certain ruler, named Nicodemus, who had approached him by night concerning the miracles he had performed. Jesus said: "Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. ... Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again." He also said, "As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up."

When the true spiritual concept of man unfolds in our consciousness, human experiences and conditions improve. Each evidence of such improvement is the consequence in some degree of an understanding that the Life of man is eternal. The belief that man is material must be displaced by the understanding that he is the expression of God, Life. Christian Science teaches that a requisite to being born again is the understanding that the spiritual expression of God, man, is immortal. On page 242 of "The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany," Mary Baker Eddy makes this significant statement: "You can never demonstrate spirituality until you declare yourself to be immortal and understand that you are so." Being immortal, man never dies.
