Song in the Night

That song at night! I heard it—clear
As daytime sound upon the ear.
The chant, persuasive, seemed to pour
Upon the dark, till more and more
I felt an angel summons near.

"Abide in me!" So full of cheer
The words, the very atmosphere
Was filled—and I gave pause before
That song at night.

And sometimes through the day I hear
The tender message, persevere,
Until I grasp the thought and soar
Above the earth to heaven's door.
When I "abide," it makes so dear
That song at night.
