Prayer
[Original article in German]
Effectual prayer brings men nearer to God, nearer to the changeless harmony of being, and destroys sin, sickness, and suffering. It is to the all-governing Principle that men must comform their thoughts, in order that they shall be wholly harmonious. Prayer is effectual only as it lifts men to a higher concept and a better understanding of God, and makes them willing to pattern their lives in obedience to God's law.
Prayer, as usually conceived of, differs from prayer in the Christian Science sense. The former is often a rather despairing appeal to what is considered to be a far-off God, to do some special thing for the welfare of a single individual; the latter is fundamentally a declaration that God's creation is spiritual, complete, and altogether good. A realization of this is what is needed for men to gain freedom from sin, sickness, sorrow, lack, and all other evils.
Prayer which is based on recognition of the fact that creation is wholly spiritual, induces men so to think, act, and live that they may receive what God has prepared for His children. God has created everything good and harmonious, and men's false concepts of existence account for the misery they suffer. True prayer corrects these false concepts and the tendency of mankind to act in accordance with them.
