Signs of the Times
Topic: The Church and Its Mission
[From the Wiltshire Times, Trowbridge, England]
Even non-Christians admit that Jesus practiced and taught the art of successful living better than anyone else. The secret of his success is an open secret, to be found out by those, but by those alone, who will try out his method for themselves. And his method is just this: to keep in touch, in the closest possible touch, with God.
This means taking up a new attitude towards life as a whole. It cannot be adopted at odd moments or just when things are going wrong. It needs thoughtful preparation and regular practice, in which reading of books and study of the Bible, God's special book, must find a place. But most of all it needs a steady effort to make actual contact with God, which is what is meant by prayer. This must be the beginning of our quest, for without God's prompting we cannot even start. In day by day communion with Him we discover what to do with our lives, and receive strength to do it. In the end we shall find a life lived in His presence our most satisfying reward.
