True Prayer

No formal rite nor man-made creed,
No vestments mortals wear,
Can change the heart, renew the mind—
That must be wrought by prayer,

The prayer that breathes sincere desire,
Howe'er expressed, for good,
For childlike faith, simplicity,
Such prayer is understood

By Him whose ear is never dull,
Whose eye is never dim.
Prayer for an understanding heart
Is always heard by Him.

And understanding blooms from faith,
And leads to things above—
Fruition and reality,
The "secret place" of Love.
