In a recent issue, a clergyman is reported to have said that "the three great heresies of today are Christian Science, spiritualism, and British Istaelism, and there are all products of fear."
As the statement betrays a serious misunderstanding of Christian Science, will you allow me space in your next issue to correct it?
Christian Science is the demonstrable Science of Christ, revealed in this age through the life and works of Mary Baker Eddy, and elucidated in her textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," and her other writings. Far from being "the product of fear," Christian Science is based on the fact that God is infinite divine Love, and man is God's reflection, or, as stated in the first chapter of Genesis, God's image and likeness.
When this great truth comes to the human thought, it frees one from the fear which is inseparable from ignorance of God, and at the same time heals the outward manifestations of that fear, expressed in sin, disease, death. St. John wrote: "God is love.... There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear;" and in Science and Health Mrs. Eddy has written (p. 275), "The starting-point of divine Science is that God, Spirit, is All-in-all, and that there is no other might nor Mind,—that God is Love, and therefore He is divine Principle."
A dictionary defines "heresy" as "opinion contrary to the orthodox doctrine of the Christian Church, or to the accepted doctrine on any subject." In this sense there was never a greater "heretic" than Jesus of Nazareth, who so fully demonstrated Christ, and in his teaching condemned much of the orthodox doctrine of his day, setting forth plainly the way of salvation through repentance—change of thought—and acknowledgment of the kingdom of God, the eternal government of divine Love.
It is the teaching of Jesus that Christian Science inculcates in all its completeness, and the textbook provides any willing seeker for truth with the rules which will enable him, in the degree of his understanding and obedience, to carry out the Master's commands to "heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils." Today there are living witnesses in many lands to the healing and regenerating power of Christian Science, which has delivered them from the bondage of fear.
