I feel I must tell you of the great blessing which the teaching of Christian Science has brought me. In 1918 I was suffering from a stomach trouble, for the medical treatment of which my admission to a hospital had already been arranged. At that time I encountered someone who informed me of Christian Science, and advised me to have treatment. Although I was somewhat doubtful about it, I proceeded to have treatment, and the result was glorious.
Since then I have been privileged to receive many other blessings in Christian Science, and happily my wife and our children have also turned to this teaching; so we all have gained an understanding of Truth.
And now I shall give an instance of how worth while it is to rely on Christian Science. In May, 1937, I had an attack of illness. The trouble was a very serious inflammation of the bladder, and I was compelled, according to the laws of the Netherlands, to consult a physician, because I am a master painter, and in regard to this trade there is compulsory sickness insurance. I obeyed the regulation. Although I was treated with care and sympathy I did not make progress. After five weeks' treatment the doctor proposed to send me to a hospital, with the prospect of an operation, but I said: "Doctor, I don't want to go to a hospital. Have you anything against my having treatment in Christian Science? I have relied on this Science for some years." He very kindly permitted me to have the treatment I desired, and said that I need take no more medicine, but must still submit to supervision. It was then Tuesday, and he said that on Friday he would again make an examination, and on Saturday would make his report.
