"Keep Right"
WHILE taking an automobile trip along a well-known highway, a student of Christian Science observed the many signs which are provided for the protection of motorists. In addition to the familiar red and green lights at intersections are the signs at many points marked, "Keep Right." Were these instructions disobeyed, confusion and catastrophe might follow. Disobeying traffic signals, or travelling in the wrong direction, can result only in trouble.
How important as we journey along life's highway is obedience to spiritual law! Perhaps before one becomes a student of Christian Science one has been careless of the way in which one has been thinking, and has not been following the path where real joy and peace are found. One learns that this attitude must be corrected in order to experience harmony. Usually the reason for this condition of thought is ignorance of the nature of God. Great numbers of people have been encouraged, and their hopes renewed, when they have turned to Christian Science and have read the words of our beloved Leader, Mrs. Eddy, on page 326 of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures": "The purpose and motive to live aright can be gained now. This point won, you have started as you should. You have begun at the numeration-table of Christian Science, and nothing but wrong intention can hinder your advancement."
It is certain that one must have the desire or purpose to "live aright," for a right start must be made in order to solve any problem. This having been done, one is ready to steer a straight course; and Christian Science shows how to do this. The way may not always be easy, for false material beliefs are apt to cling to thought. Nevertheless, the decision rests with each individual whether or not he will accept such claims as real. Through right desire or prayer, one who is faithful and obedient shakes off these false claims of mortal mind. Thoughts which are not expressive of God, divine Mind, must be overcome. At times the correction of wrong ways may seem difficult, but with the victory come peace and joy, and deep gratitude to God, divine Love. One may then sing in his heart the words of a well-loved hymn from the Christian Science Hymnal:
