The Lectures
Introductions to Lectures
Vicksburg, Mississippi (First Church).
Lecturer: Frank Bell; introduced by Charles Senour, who said:—
In the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." Mary Baker Eddy has written (p. 418): "Truth is affirmative, and confers harmony. All metaphysical logic is inspired by this simple rule of Truth, which governs all reality."
The metaphysical logic of the lecture this afternoon is not, as you will soon perceive, abstruse or obscure, but plain, direct, and practical. No one need be disturbed by the fear that he will not be able to grasp what is said, for the fundamental spiritual truths of which the lecturer will speak are simple truths. Some may never have perceived them before, but they are nevertheless easy to grasp when pointed out, and, to the extent that they are understood and applied, they will bring into your experience that harmony which characterizes spiritual reality.
Chicago, Illinois (Twenty-first Church).
Lecturer: Gavin W. Allan; introduced by Mrs. Emma Avery, who said:—
On page 1 of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, writes, "The prayer that reforms the sinner and heals the sick is an absolute faith that all things are possible to God,—a spiritual understanding of Him, an unselfed love."
Jesus' right understanding of God, his unselfed love and faith in the power of prayer, enabled him to do his mighty works.
Realizing mankind's great need of learning how to pray aright, Mrs. Eddy included a chapter on prayer in the textbook. An earnest study of this chapter will help one to know how to pray the prayer that is answered.
While I was listening to a lecture, on one occasion, several statements of truth stood out clearly. I thought about them for several days. About three months later, when I was working to overcome a painful physical condition, these statements came to my thought. I commenced to go over them, realizing their truth. Before I had finished, all pain had vanished, and I was free.
Wuppertal, Germany (Society).
Lecturer: Miss Lucia C. Coulson; introduced by Arthur Schatz, who said (as translated from the German):—
Christ Jesus left to us the following promises: "I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;" and, "I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now. Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth."
The discovery of Christian Science by our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, is the fulfillment of these promises. By her selfless work she has brought great blessing to all mankind, for to those who had lost faith in God and His creation she has revealed a new foundation whereon to build. Through the study and understanding of her many writings, particularly of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," we are enabled to rise above the cares of daily living and protect ourselves from sin and sickness. Our lecture today will indeed give us light on the path of spiritual understanding.
Toledo, Ohio (auspices First Church, Maumee, and Churches, Toledo).
Lecturer: Paul Stark Seeley; introduced by Nathan C. McCutcheon, who said: —
I speak from personal experience when I say, with all humility and reverence, that I know that Christian Science heals. I was under medical care for eighteen years. The physicians did everything they could for me, yet always with the same result — there was no lasting benefit. In my extremity I turned to Christian Science, and in a comparatively short time I was healed completely and permanently of organic and functional difficulties which had become chronic. I was greatly helped on my way to recovery by attending a lecture on Christian Science. Today we are here to listen to such a lecture, and I am very sure that all in this audience who earnestly desire spiritual rest and drink will receive them, as I did many years ago.
New Rochelle, New York (First Church).
Lecturer: Thomas E. Hurley; introduced by Julian St. John Wattley, who said:—
From time immemorial mankind has been struggling to free itself from limitations, in varying forms of sin, disease, and death. And after all these centuries of struggle what do we find? That the claims of the enslaving senses seem to many just as real today as they did yesterday. So much so, that some are tempted to give up the struggle and say, "What's the use?" My friends, there is a way out of this human bondage, and the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science has shown us the way. Mary Baker Eddy has clearly unfolded God's divine law of health and harmony in the textbook of Christian Science, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." By innumerable and well-authenticated cases of the healing of all manner of disease, she and her students have demonstrated that the healing power of the religion of Christ Jesus is just as efficacious today as it was when practiced by him on the hillsides of Judea, and later by his followers in the early centuries of the Christian era. Is there any wonder, then, that Christian Scientists all over the world are very grateful to their Leader for having revealed to this age the omnipotence of God, good, and the real man's freedom from evil?
Ottawa, Ontario, Canada (First Church).
Lecturer: Colin Rucker Eddison; introduced by George R. Lowe, who said: —
In human affairs, the worth of right thinking and of a poised mental attitude is recognized more and more by most people. To think quickly is the first thing to do in an emergency. Therefore, thought is first in point of preparedness to meet difficulties.
Prayer, contemplation of spiritual things, and consideration for others are seen to be conducive to health, as against the harmful effects of fear and anxious observation of physical symptoms. Many people pray, but many hamper their prayers by resort to material means. The thought which sees spiritual well-being as paramount, is best. Christ Jesus said, "Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you."
Christian Science inculcates radical reliance upon God, infinite good. It requires thinking from the standpoint of perfect Mind. It teaches what this practice can do, has done, and is doing. In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 135) Mrs. Eddy has written: "The same power which heals sin heals also sickness. This is 'the beauty of holiness,' that when Truth heals the sick, it casts out evils, and when Truth casts out the evil called disease, it heals the sick."
Birmingham, Alabama (First Church).
Lecturer: John Randall Dunn; introduced by Miss Sarah N. Dryer, who said:—
Centuries ago our Master, Christ Jesus, said, "To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth."
We are learning day by day, in the light of Christian Science, that the Word of Truth taught by our Master is law, the law of Life. In our textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy (p. 97), we find this substantiative statement: "Christianity is again demonstrating the Life that is Truth, and the Truth that is Life, by the apostolic work of casting out error and healing the sick."
I have had many opportunities during the past seventeen years to prove this Word of Truth in my own experience. Sickness has been replaced by health, nervousness and fear by a true sense of harmony and peace, and problems of a business or professional nature have been solved.
Detroit, Michigan (Fourth Church).
Lecturer: Professor Hermann S. Hering; introduced by Elmer H. Gamrath, who said:—
Christian Science is a demonstrable religion. It can be utilized in our everyday experiences. Through a better understanding of God, good, and of man as His reflection, we are enabled to heal sickness and overcome sin and lack.
Mary Baker Eddy defines Christian Science in one of her writings, "Rudimental Divine Science" (p. 1), as "the law of God, the law of good, interpreting and demonstrating the divine Principle and rule of universal harmony." Through the application of divine Principle I have experienced many physical healings. I have been protected from accident, and my needs have been bountifully supplied. The law of God is ever present and available to all, needing only to be understood and utilized. On page 13 of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, writes: "Love is impartial and universal in its adaptation and bestowals. It is the open fount which cries, 'Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters.'"
Baltimore, Maryland (Third Church).
Lecturer: Mrs. Louise Wheatley Cook; introduced by Miss Gertrude A. Richards, who said:—
If someone told you that he knew how you could be well, happy, contented, free, and prosperous, you would want to know the way to obtain such bliss here and now.
The Bible is full of such promises, and "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, when read and studied, is the open door which leads to the possession of all these blessings.
