Tages-Anzeiger
An article in a recent issue reports that at the doctors' and pastors' meeting at Zurich the statement was made that Christian Science is neither Christian nor scientific.
Christian Science is Christian: it recognizes as obligatory all that Christ Jesus demanded and expected of his followers. The consecrated study and practice of its teachings is accompanied by the "signs following," which the great Master promised to his pupils; thus his word is fulfilled, "Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also." Christian Science is also scientific; for it is based on an unchangeable Principle, the divine Mind, and it can be demonstrated. It is ordered, demonstrable knowledge, that is, Science.
The article said that Christian Science taught how to conceal the truth by means of mesmeric suggestion, and that therefore it gave dangerous and "demoniacal power to its students." This is a great error. Christian Science condemns the use of human will power in all its forms: suggestion, hypnotism, mesmerism, and so forth. Mary Baker Eddy writes in her textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 235), "Better suffer a doctor infected with smallpox to attend you than to be treated mentally by one who does not obey the requirements of divine Science."
