Mastering Adverse Circumstances

How often do mortals find themselves facing adverse circumstances which have resulted from ignorance, fear, or sin—evil believed in and practiced! It is as if there were two real but antagonistic powers active in the experience of men—good and evil, with evil apparently often the more powerful of the two, causing sickness, suffering, unhappiness, and ultimately death. Every mortal has to contend with the belief that evil is as real as good, and with the effects which follow from the belief. And how frequently their efforts to counteract evil and its seeming effects appear to be in vain!

The questions often present themselves. Must this go on indefinitely? Will mankind have to face throughout future ages the same or similar difficulties—the same kind of distress, the same kind of afflictions and sorrows as it has had to contend with in the past? These are very natural questions, both of them, and often prompted by the hope that there may be found a way whereby the burdens of the human race shall be lifted, and its adverse problems solved. Of old the children of Israel thought in that way; and their prophets foretold the coming of the Messiah, who should bring them a full salvation. Jesus came in fulfillment of prophecy, and Christendom proclaims him the Messiah. But how many can truly say that they have realized the import of the Master's teachings so clearly that through them they are able to face life's problems without misgivings, and with the assurance of being able to solve them?

Christian Science is in the midst of men today with the same solution that Christ Jesus offered and his early followers accepted, namely, pure Christianity. Christian Science accepts the inspired teaching of the Nazarene Prophet, and that of the apostles based upon his teaching. But it does more, it elucidates the Science upon which Jesus' teaching and works were founded, the divine Science which inspired his entire ministry, his every word and deed.
