Topic: Youth and Religion

[F. R. Kempson, in the Courier-Mail, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia]

What is the spiritual outlook of the average young person? Some may think the question would be better put thus: Has the modern young person a spiritual outlook?...

Modern youth is unable to countenance any form of make-believe or humbug, and when youth asks experience to explain some difficult religious issue, and experience merely retreats to ancient dogmas and shibboleths, which youth with its present higher standard of education is unable to accept, can we wonder that our young people exhibit the much-complained-of paganism and defiance of religious conventions? ... I am convinced that the outlook of modern youth has a quite intense spiritual background, but the perplexities, disappointments, and evasions that they meet with force them to leave it all in abeyance.
