Indescribable gratitude fills my heart when I think of...

Indescribable gratitude fills my heart when I think of my first healing in Christian Science. Many years ago, before I knew of Christian Science, I had a very weak heart. We turned from one doctor to another. The best doctors were consulted, but they could not help me and I became weaker from day to day. They shrugged their shoulders and said they could do nothing; things might go on for some time, but it was just as possible that death would come any minute. After that we tried nature healing methods, homeopathy, and other remedies, but these methods, too, brought no result. I lay in bed for six months, and my relatives and I were very unhappy.

One day a business acquaintance called my husband's attention to Christian Science and told him that I could certainly get well. He said that he himself was not able to explain it to him, but that his father was a Christian Scientist. He gave my husband the address of a practitioner in Dresden. Even then I could not decide to turn to it, for I thought it meant I had to accept another faith. I had prayed so much and so earnestly to God, and still was not healed. I did want to get well, but I also wanted to remain faithful to God.

In addition to the heart trouble I contracted a severe case of influenza. On account of the pain, I could no longer talk, but moaned and groaned day and night. While I was in this great distress, my husband reminded me of Christian Science, for my relatives could not bear to see me suffer any longer. Finally, I gave my consent and my husband went to the practitioner. While they were talking together I fell quietly asleep. My husband came home happy, and when he found me sleeping so peacefully he knew beyond a doubt that I should soon be well. He awakened me and told me that Christian Science was purely evangelical, the Christ-healing, and that we had but to learn to know God better. I was very happy at this news, and sincerely thanked God. Up till then I had been allowed to eat only a little, and then only prescribed food, and I had not had meat for months; but not my husband told me that I could eat anything I wished. Things had never tasted so good to me, and I felt well and happy and should have liked most of all to get up immediately. For two days, however, I just ate and slept, for I had not previously slept for some days. On the third day a voice seemed to tell me that I could get up without further ado, for indeed God would protect me. I got up and sewed all forenoon. The insurance doctor came and was horrified when he saw that I had dared to get up and sew. He ordered me to bed immediately, and said that if a relapse occurred we should send for him. The relapse did not occur. On the contrary, I felt better from day to day, and on the fifth day I was able to take care of all my household duties. I had completely forgotten the doctor. He came once more and could not understand it when he found me well and cheerful. He thought that I had become very seriously ill again; but after he had examined me thoroughly, he said, "A miracle has happened here."
