Demonstration

"Demonstration" is a word much used in Christian Science; and in order to "make a demonstration," it is essential that we understand what it means.

A dictionary defines "demonstration," in part, as "a proof beyond the possibility of a doubt, ... method of showing that from given premises certain results must follow; also, the process of proving certain conclusions from given premises." What is it that Christian Science proves beyond the possibility of a doubt, and what are the premises and the method by which certain results are obtained? In short, what is demonstration in Christian Science?

One usually turns to Christian Science because he is in trouble of some sort. He may be physically ill, bound with sorrow, troubled with some sin, or in financial need. He has heard of others who have been freed from such conditions through Christian Science, and so he seeks its ministrations for himself. He may be helped through the work of a Christian Science practitioner, and through his own study of Christian Science he may help himself. If he has been sick, he hopes Truth will make him well. If he is suffering from a sense of lack, he may be expecting God to find him a new position, or cause his income to be increased. For has he not read in the Bible that it is God "who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases; ... who crowneth thee with lovingkindness and tender mercies; who satisfieth thy mouth with good things"? This newly awakened faith in good opens the way for the spiritual understanding which is gained in Christian Science.
