Holiness Is Natural

"I am the Lord, your Holy One, the creator of Israel, your King." No belief in evil has ever touched the holiness of God. The spiritual man's consciousness, being God's reflection, is unalterably spiritual and holy. As understood in Christian Science, holiness is not an acquired virtue; it is the evidence of oneness with the "Holy One." Hence, one who strives to be holy while still believing in the reality, presence, and power of evil, must divest himself of this ancient and modern superstition if he would spontaneously and joyously reflect the holiness of God, who is "of purer eyes than to behold evil."

Through spiritual understanding all may win release from mortal self-deception and the sin and discord which accompany it. All may also throw off the notion, fostered by a false sense of religion, that because of His perfection God, infinite good, is out of one's present reach, and that it would be presumptuous to expect to draw near to Him this side of the grave. This belief in separation from God finds expression in a sick and sinful humanity. The truth about the omnipresence of God, good, is implied in the statement in Jeremiah, "Am I a God at hand, saith the Lord, and not a God afar off?"

Christian Science assures one and all that health and holiness are always "at hand." On this basis it carries on the redemptive work inaugurated by Christ Jesus and his disciples. The attitude of this Science toward the sinner who honestly reaches out for his freedom through spiritual regeneration is invariably one of redemption. Its attitude toward mortal mind's insistence on the reality of sin is one of utter repudiation of its claim to power, presence, malign influence, or authority.
