Among the Churches

Journal

Coronado, California (First Church).—First Church of Christ, Scientist, Coronado, held services celebrating dedication in the church edifice at the corner of C Avenue and Eighth Street, on Sunday, October 31, 1937, in the morning and in the afternoon. A cordial invitation to attend was extended to the public.

The spacious stucco building, costing approximately thirty thousand dollars, including furnishings, was completely paid for, as is customary with Christian Science churches, before dedication. Of Spanish type architecture, with lofty windows and shaded archways, its simplicity is the keynote of its design. An attractive formal garden joins the church and Reading Room, which is located in an adjacent building.

Beginning with informal gatherings in the homes of several earnest Christian Scientists in 1902 and 1903, the organization has made steady progress. In 1904 a cottage on Isabella Avenue was rented and a society was organized, holding regular Sunday services and Wednesday meetings, which included testimonies of healing in Christian Science. A Sunday school and Reading Room were also established at this time. In 1905 a lot was purchased on Park Place and a small building was erected in which the first services were held on Sunday, September 5, 1905. The society was incorporated by a charter from the state in 1906.
