The Life Line

A thrilling sight it is, the paying out of a life line, when a member of a surf club goes to the rescue of the a swimmer struggling amid difficulties. Wave after wave is hurled against the rescuer, but he skillfully plunges beneath the surging billows and emerges on the other side. Presently, the human need is met; the one in danger grasps the arm lovingly extended to help, and is drawn to safety as the club members draw in the line.

What grand lessons the student of Christian Science learns from an episode such as this! We see that the arms of divine Love extricate us from our difficulties as we truly rely on God. God recognizes only His own perfect likeness, which is never in danger. But we need to know and to understand this eternal fact, to see ourselves as God sees us. Therefore, our part is to accept the Christ, Truth, which brings us sure salvation. And if anyone struggling with waves of fear and discouragement grasps this truth and uses it, he is drawn to the true sense of safety.

When we grasp the truth about God and man—the life line which Love provides in Christian Science, and which Mary Baker Eddy devoted her life to bring to us—and hold to it, then the truth to which we cling delivers us. It does this by drawing us closer to God and to the realization of our spiritual unity with God, divine Love.
