The gracious acknowledgment of the spiritual-mindedness...

Montebello Messenger

The gracious acknowledgment of the spiritual-mindedness of Mary Baker Eddy, in an article in your recent issue, is appreciated. However, exception must be taken to the implications of the item.

The whole trend of Mrs. Eddy's teachings is to glorify God, Spirit, as the one and only cause. Reasoning logically from this premise, she repudiates the supposition of intelligent matter and its vibrations and denies that the planets have any influence on man. In her book "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" she says (p. 259), "Vibration is not intelligence; hence it is not a creator;" and (p. 102): "There is but one real attraction, that of Spirit." "The planets have no more power over man than over his Maker, since God governs the universe; but man, reflecting God's power, has dominion over all the earth and its hosts."

In strict accord with Jesus' Sermon on the Mount, Mrs. Eddy shows that man cannot serve both Spirit and matter. She indicates that matter, whether it is called planets or drugs, is an illusion and has no power over God and His creation; and that any seeming influence exerted on mankind by materiality is only a mesmeric effect of the carnal or mortal mind, which Paul classifies as enmity against God. Furthermore, she teaches that through spiritual understanding, men and women can avail themselves of the divine law that destroys all false material beliefs and brings harmony into their lives. Thus Christian Science heals serious cases of sickness and sin.
