In the autumn of 1917, when in the Adirondack Mountains...

In the autumn of 1917, when in the Adirondack Mountains on a mission for the government, I was attacked by influenza. I was confined to a room in a hotel and a doctor was called. However, he was unable to visit me until about forty-four hours later.

Previous to that time I had attended the Christian Science church for a number of years, and through the healing of another member of my family I had become sufficiently interested to carry with me the Bible and a copy of the textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. I read the textbook quite regularly and occasionally studied the Lesson-Sermons in the Christian Science Quarterly.

During the time I was waiting for the doctor, I read as much as I could from the textbook, trying to understand it and to get what help I could from it. I knew that it had helped others and felt that it would also help me. When the doctor arrived he said that the crisis was passed and I was out of danger. He prescribed no medicine, and I never saw him again. About a week later I resumed my work.
