Realizing There Is But One Mind

[Original article in French]

One of the principal difficulties confronting students in their approach to Christian Science is their belief in the reality of both Spirit and matter, good and evil, Truth and error, Love and hate. Mortals in general are so wrapped up in this traditional belief that they try to work from two points of view, namely, that God is All, and that evil is also real and tangible. Alas, their attempts to heal by this defective mental process are not satisfactory!

Because Christian Science denies the reality of matter and evil, it is able to free us from the deceptive dualism which leads human thought to swing to and fro between two opposite beliefs, finding no fixity in either.

To help us get rid of this belief of dualism, our revered Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, rouses our thought by frequent use of the words "the only" and "the one," when she speaks of God, divine Mind. She thus corroborates the words of Scripture, "Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God is one Lord." In Christian Science the two terms "only" and "one" have a rigorously exclusive meaning. "Oneness" is defined, in part, as "uniqueness."
