In the spring of 1904 I was attracted to Christian Science...
In the spring of 1904 I was attracted to Christian Science by watching the daily life of a family who were earnest students of this religion. These neighbors were the first to tell me something of this beautiful truth. Eagerly I purchased a copy of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. Before I had read one third of this wonderful book, I was applying its demonstrable truths.
During the first month of my reading, my father was almost instantaneously healed of a crushed foot, through the explanation of the truths stated in the first chapter of Genesis in the light of Christian Science. I had caught, though faintly, the meaning of the words in Science and Health (p. 14), "Become conscious for a single moment that Life and intelligence are purely spiritual,—neither in nor of matter,—and the body will then utter no complaints." I perceived that it was indeed a textbook, and that the statements therein were provable—true—for I was using them daily. I was healed of stomach trouble of long standing and chronic throat trouble. Much fear disappeared, particularly the fear of certain kinds of food, which had always caused distress. These foods have never disturbed me since the cessation of the fear. These healings and many others were brought about solely through the reading of Science and Health.
Many years after my first healings, I was wonderfully sustained and comforted when my parents passed on, and I was able to overcome a deep sense of grief, loss, and loneliness by relying wholly on Christian Science. During the weeks that followed, some words from "Unity of Good" by Mrs. Eddy were most helpful to me (p. 11): "Jesus taught us to walk over, not into or with, the currents of matter, or mortal mind;" and (p. 8), "Everything is as real as you make it, and no more so."
