Foundation and Superstructure
Nothing could be broader in scope than Mary Baker Eddy's definition of "Church" on page 583 of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," as "the structure of Truth and Love; whatever rests upon and proceeds from divine Principle."
The true Church was revealed to Mrs. Eddy through divine Science, and it will be revealed to us as divine Science is understood by us. As we discern and demonstrate the universal and eternal nature of divine Principle, which is God, we shall find this Church to be ever present and everlasting.
The Christian Science church organization—the human institution which expresses the true Church—is orderly and prosperous, and fulfills its perfect work as its activity is based upon divine Principle. Divine Principle is expressed as real consciousness, and real consciousness is manifested in right activity. Through spiritual consciousness alone is revealed to us the true concept of Church. In proportion as the impulse and inspiration of our work proceed from divine Principle, its results are beautiful and satisfying.
