Now, not Later

Christian Science wakens its students to apprehend the perfection of God and man, and to express it here and now in the measure of their spiritual understanding. "Behold, now is the day of salvation." This "day of salvation" symbolizes the eternal radiance of Spirit and spirituality, in which there is no mental darkness, no moral failing, no disease, inertia, or discouragement.

Jesus' teaching and healing ministry brought forth daily proofs of the oneness of God and man. He advocated proof, not postponement of proof. Through spiritual understanding and the spirit of love, he freed men instantaneously from the incubus of diseas and sin. On one occasion, when he found Martha sorrowing because of the death of Lazarus, he said to her with loving reassurance, "Thy brother shall rise again." Under the spell of traditional belief Martha replied, "I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day." But that same day Jesus raised Lazarus. He proved it to be "the day of salvation" from "the last enemy."

Christian Science likewise stands for present proofs of life, health, and holiness through spiritual illumination. It demands that we acknowledge spiritual perfection and forsake false thoughts and feelings, fears and grudges. Are we postponing this acknowledgment and this forsaking until tomorrow or next day? Are we surrendering to discouragement today and hoping for more courage tomorrow? Are we occasionally besieged by the fear that certain stubborn conditions will be put off only through passing on? If so, are we not looking to resurrection from false beliefs "at the last day" instead of today?
