When I first heard of Christian Science it was the word...
When I first heard of Christian Science it was the word "Christian" combined with "Science" that most impressed me, besides the question of healing. As I had faith both in Christianity and in Science, I felt it should be investigated. I studied the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and other Christian Science literature; but at the same time disputed with the Christian Scientists I met. At last there dawned upon my consciousness a little of the glorious truth: perfect God and the real man made in His image and likeness, and therefore also perfect. I needed Christian Science sorely, for my concept of my fellow men and of myself was very poor and imperfect; I was indeed a sorrowful and pessimistic man. Little by little I learned through Christian Science that evil and imperfect and inharmonious conditions could not have anything to do with the infinite divine Principle, God, and therefore could have nothing to do with His image, the real man. Jesus called such evil conditions a lie, and he showed us the way to come out of them. This new viewpoint changed my outlook on life and brought me happiness and peace of mind. And I am sure "that he which hath begun a good work in [me] will perform it."
I am thankful for the many years of good health I have had since I came to Christian Science. During the epidemic called the Spanish influenza I had symptoms of that disease, but with the aid of a Christian Scientist they were quickly overcome, without my losing any time from my daily work. Also symptoms of colds have been quickly healed. My teeth have been much stronger than before. I have lost the strong inclination for smoking which I formerly had.
The Bible has become a new and very dear book to me. More clearness on the teaching of atonement is one of the wonderful things I have gained through the study of Christian Science. From youth I was by family ties closely connected with the state church, but the doctrine of atonement in that church became early a mystery to me. What a revelation then was the studying of the chapter on Atonement and Eucharist in the Christian Science textbook; and what a blessing to the old church this chapter alone will be, when some day it is better known and understood.
