At the time I began to study Christian Science I was suffering from tuberculosis. I had previously heard of this Science, and when it seemed to be the only hope left for me I decided to find out something about it. I was in bed most of the time, and it was with great difficulty that I walked a block to the street car to go to a Christian Science Reading Room. At the Reading Room I was lovingly offered a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, from the lending library, and was shown "the scientific statement of being" on page 468. I was told that I would find it helpful to memorize this, which I did upon returning home.
The next two days I read a little in the book, and on the third day I was awakened early in the morning by a severe hemorrhage. Previous to this time I had had several of these experiences, always accompanied by an intense fear, but this hemorrhage was the worst of them all. I remembered "the scientific statement of being" and began to repeat it. It seemed only so many words to me, for I did not understand it, but as I continued to repeat the words the bleeding stopped, and later I was able to get up and go out for a walk, with no aftereffects whatever. Other times after such experiences I would suffer severe pain, and be in bed for days, completely exhausted.
After this I asked for help from a Christian Science practitioner, which was very lovingly given, and although the complete healing took several months, there was a steady improvement from the first. I am very grateful that the slow healing enabled me to gain a firm foundation in Truth.
