Spiritual Character-Building
The continued growth of the Cause of Christian Science rests on spiritual development in the consciousness of each individual student. All who accept Christian Science as their standard are responsible for their own part in the progress of the movement.
The world's greatest need today is for spiritual thinking. The beliefs of mortal mind are beliefs of error. They are swayed by every wind that blows. But he who bases his thoughts upon spiritual facts as the only reality is helping to establish in the human consciousness the fact of the perfect universe, and the perfect man who dwells therein. Old doctrines will thereby crumble away, superstitious systems will fade out as relics of the past. Spiritual thinking alone can hold crime, strikes, wars, famine, pestilence, poverty, and disaster in check through its mighty power. Spiritual thought is more potent than all the strikes that were ever waged or any battle that was ever fought. Spiritual thought comes from God, Love, to man. It is, therefore, all-powerful and knows no defeat.
The building of spiritual character, although it may seem of little interest to the masses, is the perfect goal before Christian Scientists. The gain of true character is the result of spiritual understanding and its practice in daily life. To build Christian character, one should seek the divine example of Christ Jesus, who exemplified a perfect life and work. In so doing, he will strengthen his mental fiber, develop spirituality of thought, and discover his unity with God. On page 1 of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, writes, "Desire is prayer." One who is humble, meek, and childlike, whose desire is to know the power and presence of God, can never be deprived of his inheritance of spiritual character.
