"Man is the expression of God's being"

Christian Scientists know that man is the reflection of God. They have learned that man expresses the qualities of God, including spiritual power, and that this truth applies to the real or spiritual selfhood of each one of us. But how liable we are to limit our power for good! How feebly sometimes we use those spiritual qualities, including spiritual power, in meeting our own problems and in helping others to meet theirs! The suggestions of material sense, with their apparently mesmeric influence, may seem difficult to overcome. But overcome them we must by seeing them as unreal, in order that we may be free to express the spirituality which is ours as the children of God.

Mrs. Eddy writes, "Man is the expression of God's being" (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 470). The wonderful thing is that, since man expresses God's being, it is natural for us to manifest divine power, with its protecting and healing influence. This was clearly illustrated in the experience of Daniel, who was cast into the lions' den. Daniel remained in the den throughout the night, perfectly protected against the animality which apparently surrounded him. His goodness, his innocency, his freedom from fear, shielded him from all harm. When King Darius asked Daniel if his God had delivered him, he replied that He had, giving as the reason, "Forasmuch as before him innocency was found in me; and also before thee, O king, have I done no hurt" (Daniel 6:22).

Christ Jesus gave a similar reason for the power he manifested, declaring that it was from God. Every victory he had over material law, so called; every healing of sickness and sin he brought about, was the result of his spiritual understanding of God. He said (John 8:29), "He that sent me is with me: the Father hath not left me alone; for I do always those things that please him." Jesus knew that "man is the expression of God's being," understood man's unity with God and, demonstrating what he knew, wrought the miracles or wonders which characterized his ministry.
