In the fall of 1908 I found myself in what seemed to be...

In the fall of 1908 I found myself in what seemed to be a state of complete despair. All earthly happiness seemed ruined, and health greatly impaired, with verdicts from several physicians that unless an operation was performed at once and a complete change of environment obtained, only one thing could be expected: to be sent to some sanitarium with but little hope of recovery. The change of environment was accomplished by leaving home and family for an indefinite visit with friends. After I had been there a short time, no improvement was noticeable either mentally or physically.

Shortly before I left these friends a book was given me to pass the time one afternoon. In the story a hymn was quoted which seemed to open some closed door of hope, and my interest quickened. This was our dearly loved hymn by Mrs. Eddy beginning, "Shepherd, show me how to go" (Poems, p. 14). Within a few days I reached the home of another friend in another city, and there I found students of Christian Science, and the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. This I read for a short time, and that night, being wakened by one of the violent headaches to which I was subject, I resolved to let God heal me. My regular medicine was near by, but I said, "No, with God all things are possible." For two hours the battle was waged, and the temptation to take the medicine was put aside. Finally, sleep came, and when I awoke in the morning no trace of headache was found, nor has there been any return of this malady.

Upon my return home the textbook was borrowed. a Bible was taken out, and earnest study was started. All material aids were discarded in the home, and every member of the household rejoiced in my healing, which soon followed. No opposition to this new-found truth was evident in the home; each member received help when the need arose. Since then, Christian Science has been our only physician. No operation in my case was ever necessary, and many and varied have been the healings in our home. An outstanding one was that of infection from a tooth which was being treated by a dentist. My son's face was so distorted that he was hardly recognizable in a few hours from the time he was stricken. This was on a Monday morning, and on the Thursday following he was free and left for a visit several miles away. No remedy of any kind was administered, and no sign of the trouble remained.
