Towards the close of 1932 I was very suddenly attacked...

Towards the close of 1932 I was very suddenly attacked by a painful bladder trouble. All the symptoms manifested were typical of cancer. I could not rid my consciousness of this word, although I knew that my body could not be sick, and that suffering is only a dream state from which I must be awakened.

Through the faithful work of a Christian Science practitioner it was not necessary for me to remain in bed, and I was able to do my work in such a way that those around me knew nothing of this error. It was now my duty to overcome fear completely. One Wednesday afternoon, this illness with all its symptoms, fear, pain, and other pictures, was especially noticeable. Fear whispered to me: You cannot go to church in this condition; it is quite impossible. But the voice of Truth said to me: Go right along; God is the only power. I arrived at the service heavily burdened. My obedience was so richly rewarded, however, that with a heart filled with gratitude I returned home completely healed. I give many thanks to our Father-Mother God for this proof of divine help.

In 1934, as the result of a fall, I injured my forehead, suffered contusions about the ribs, and also broke my arm, splintering the bone. Because my arm was broken, I thought a doctor had to be called to put it in splints if necessary. When the doctor arrived the next morning, her first question was, "Did you sleep well?" When I answered in the affirmative, she said then that she thought the arm could not be broken, that the pain was caused only by the severe hemorrhage; but to make sure, she advised me to have the arm X-rayed. The X-ray doctor, on looking at the picture, asked me where I got such a bad break. I had hoped that my doctor would be able to bind the arm firmly the next day, but the break was too complicated, and she advised me to go to a surgeon. But he too could do nothing with the splintered arm, and could only make me a supporting bandage. He said such a bad break could not heal in less than six weeks, and that in such cases complications frequently arose.

After I found that none of the doctors could help me, I turned wholly to God. Once more I found that when we seek God with our whole heart, we find Him. God has wonderfully helped me, for through the spiritual work of a practitioner I had a wonderful healing. In a few days I felt and heard the splinters of the bone slip back into place. In less than two weeks' treatment, to the great surprise of the doctors, the arm was completely healed.

I am sincerely grateful to be able to understand that God is a help in time of trouble. A sense of profound gratitude also fills my heart for Mrs. Eddy.

(Mrs.) Caroline Bekker, Hamburg, Germany.

I wish to corroborate the foregoing testimony of my wife, and I should like to add that a great change has come into my life since I started studying Christian Science.

Through studying the textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, in conjunction with the Bible, I have become a changed individual. Moral and physical defects have fallen away from me. I have also learned to look upon God as an ever-present help.

Some time ago I fell from a streetcar which was going at full speed. At first I thought that my skull was fractured by the impact with the pavement, but in that very moment there came to my consciousness what I had learned in Christian Science. I knew that no accidents befall a child of God, and that God fills all space. What, then, could happen when God was with me? The conductor offered to help me, but I refused any help, and began to work as we are taught in Christian Science.

I had learned from the textbook to deny the evidence of the material senses. So I did not even mention the incident at home and during the night went on working for myself. The next morning all pain had disappeared, and I was quite free. I am exceedingly grateful for this proof of God's omnipresence, and grateful that Mrs. Eddy has again revealed the Christ-teaching to us.—Ferdinand Bekker.
