Solving Problems in Christian Science
In reality man's being is harmonious, holy, and endowed with life eternal. These unchanging, enduring qualities man has by reflection from the Father. As God is the same yesterday, today, and forever, discord is regarded in Christian Science as the seeming presence of something which falsely claims to interfere with the harmony of man. It is the apparent presence of some "high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God." The task, therefore, is to discern the fact about God, obscured by false beliefs, so that we may reflect and express the truth by conforming our thinking and our living to its standard.
Frightened mortals, faced with problems and fettered by false theories and suppositions, are working in the dark. Their movements, hampered by false teaching, are directed in every way but the right one. Mrs. Eddy tells us in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 273), "Human belief has sought out many inventions, but not one of them can solve the problem of being without the divine Principle of divine Science." As the physical senses, upon whose testimony human belief bases its "many inventions," cannot cognize God or His reflection, man, it is evident that we must look through their deceiving claims to find "the divine Principle of divine Science." Discerning Principle, we shall then apprehend the reflection; and we have the Master's promise that if we abide in him and he in us we may ask what we will, and it shall be done unto us. Abiding in the Christ, or reflecting God, as Jesus did, we may ask the Father, with like confidence, for the understanding to solve any problem.
Principle and reflection are terms which are not always easily grasped. Principle, in ordinary parlance, is the source or cause from which a thing proceeds. It is a power which acts continuously and uniformly. The Bible tells us that God is the only cause and creator, that He is omnipotent, and that constantly He is sustaining His universe, supplying it with all things needful. Therefore, in accordance with these statements, Christian Science declares that God is the divine Principle of His divine creation. Furthermore, as the Bible tells us that God is Love, Love must be and is the divine Principle which makes, maintains, and governs man and the universe.
