"The sustaining infinite"

"To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, to-day is big with blessings." This inspiring statement forms the introductory sentence of the Preface to "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." In it Mrs. Eddy indicates the vast significance of divine Science as a present reality. Immediately it brings comforting reassurance to many whose faith may almost have reached the vanishing point. In one who read this statement for the first time was awakened the hope of finding God, not far removed from our daily experiences, but near at hand to bless.

In order to realize the "blessings" we first must learn what our Leader may have meant in using the word "leaning," for this is required on our part. A dictionary will tell us that some of the meanings of "to lean" are to rely for support, comfort, to bend so as to receive support, to incline in opinion or desire. Spiritually applied, the word "leaning" conveys the need of radical reliance upon "the sustaining infinite." This reliance on God is the first requirement in the healing work of Christian Science practice. This reliance is in harmony with the First Commandment, and reverses the false belief in a power opposed to God.

The word "sustaining" also is capable of the broadest application in that there is no limit or bound to the power which sustains, supports, and protects those who are relying wholly upon the infinite God. The manifestation of the blessings which ensure our happiness comes with the humble and steadfast desire to be receptive to spiritual guidance; to be wholly dependent upon the outstretched arm of Love; to be sustained by the good will of God.
