Transcript

Since the report of a meeting of the International New Thought Alliance in your issue of June 22 might lead some of your readers to conclude that Christian Science is one of "two main streams of New Thought" which have flowed from the teachings of Phineas P. Quimby, I shall appreciate your courtesy in publishing this letter.

Whether or not your report correctly indicates the source of New Thought, it should be understood that Christian Science is not based on the teachings of Mr. Quimby.

It is true that Mary Baker Eddy sought help from Mr. Quimby before she discovered Christian Science, and expressed gratitude for such temporary relief as she received. His method of treatment included physical manipulation, and he relied on no other power or presence than his own. Christian Science treatment distinctly eschews physical manipulation, and its patients are turned to God, divine Love, for healing.
