In the year 1914 I took up the study of Christian Science...

In the year 1914 I took up the study of Christian Science through a friend's lending me a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. I read the book through twice and the chapter on Prayer several more times. Finally I returned the book to him with thanks. From that time on I paid no more attention to Christian Science, until a number of months later when I was back in that city on business. I was sitting in my room suffering physically and mentally and very much confused as to what I should do. In the middle of the afternoon a thought came to me, which I recognized later as the "still small voice," Why don't you go to your friend and get one of those Christian Science books and get some help? I immediately put on my hat and coat and went to my friend's store. He sensed that something was wrong and asked if there was anything he could do to help me. I asked him to get me a copy of the Christian Science book he had lent me, and he went to a Reading Room in the next block and in a few minutes returned with a copy of Science and Health, saying that he knew it would do me good. That was the best investment I ever made and one of the few that ever profited me anything.

I took the book back to my room and read most of the afternoon and evening. I slept very well that night and felt much better in the morning. I finished my business in that city and went on. During the remainder of the trip and at home I read every spare moment I could find. Then I started to go to church and began to get some real understanding of Christian Science.

From my earliest boyhood I had been afflicted with hay fever and asthma in their worst forms and had gone to many specialists, at great expence, but I got only a little temporary relief, which was all they had promised me, as they said my case was incurable, After I had persevered with the reading of the textbook, I was reminded by my wife that I had gone through the entire season for hay fever and had never given it one thought. That was over twenty years ago, and I have never had a return of it in any manner.
