With the desire to do some good in the world, I became...

With the desire to do some good in the world, I became a materia medica nurse, and continued in that work for many years. Although I read my Bible daily and tried to get help from it, I was not successful; it was very confusing to me, until I had the blessing of Christian Science. Now I realize what true happiness means.

Twenty-one years ago, just before the birth of our twin sons, my husband was in another state trying to get work. I had no home and no money. I wanted to die. In desperation I rang up a friend, who recently had become a Christian Science nurse. She asked me if I would let her help me in Christian Science and I agreed. So with five dollars, which was all the money my friend had, we answered an advertisement in the evening paper, and we were led to just the house we needed. We had no food, but by the next morning food came from the most unexpected sources.

I did not realize what a wonderful thing this was until some time afterward. I was so numb with self-pity that it took me a long time to get away from self. I had promised my friend to read Science and Health by Mary Baker Eddy, because she had given me the book, so I faithfully struggled along with my daily reading, seemingly not understanding anything I read. Yet during those early days I was healed of heart trouble, from which I had suffered for several years. Since then we have had many healings in our family of six: healings of scarlet fever, smallpox, colds, headaches, extreme nervousness, and mastoid abscess. My husband was healed of a neck condition which made him carry his head nearly on his left shoulder. For seven years of misery he had tried the best of everything the medical profession had to offer, without success.
