In her work "Retrospection and Introspection" (p. 70)...
In her work "Retrospection and Introspection" (p. 70) Mrs. Eddy tells us, "Each individual must fill his own niche in time and eternity." The realization of this truth came to me about three years ago when I was confronted with the problem of unemployment. At the time I was let go by the firm by whom I was employed, I was preparing to receive class instruction in Christian Science. The organization which let me go gave me two months' extra salary. I immediately secured temporary employment and worked until the time I went through class. Three months of intermittent, temporary positions, and finally a part-time position followed. The fact that I did not work regularly left me much time for study and consideration of the situation. The Bible and the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, were my constant guides. At that time I undertook the task of reading the textbook from beginning to end. The day following the conclusion of this reading, I received an offer of a position.
The memory of the joy with which I concluded this reading is still of great inspiration to me. The last hundred pages devoted to healings, which were accomplished simply by the reading of Science and Health, filled my heart to overflowing with gratitude for the great good which Christian Science is accomplishing, and for the fact that a reading of the statements of truth, as set forth in Science and Health, is proving efficacious in healing so many people.
This new position which came to me was better than any I had ever had, and the salary was higher. I have learned in this position that in filling "his own niche" each individual may rest, secure in the knowledge that no one wishes to fill his niche for him, or to take it from him, since each one has his own individual position to fill. During this entire experience the words of a verse from the Bible were proved true: "And his allowance was a continual allowance given him of the king, a daily rate for every day, all the days of his life."
