"I am the way"

You who, alone, live out your human day
Longing to find a comrade on the way,
Listen! for many friendly feet are there
Pacing the very path that you must share.
Many a shoulder not as sturdy grown,
Needing the strength and succor of your own;
And hands all eagerness your hand to grasp,
If they but find compassion in its clasp.
Listen! and hear the consecrated tread
Of those whose work has carried them ahead.
They walk beside you if you need to be
Comforted, nourished by their company.

If you find ruts and rubbish in your track,
And brambles holding all the blossoms back;
If you find barren harvests in your land,
It is because you do not understand
Love, that seems scarce to you and highly priced,
Is free to all who live the love of Christ!
