Desire and Duty

[Written Especially for Young People]

"I don't like that word 'duty'; I do things because I like to," was the emphatic remark of a young person. And to a listener it occurred that there is not so much difference, after all, between desire and duty. Just as Mrs. Eddy's statement (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 4), "The habitual struggle to be always good is unceasing prayer," has clarified and made practical the Bible injunction to "pray without ceasing," so do her teachings reconcile desire and duty.

In his "Ode to Duty" the poet Wordsworth, addressing "Duty," says:
