Today

It may be said that a great number of the fears, anxieties, and worries which beset mankind are concerned more with the future than with the present. Many writers have recognized this. Someone has offered the wise counsel not to stain the blue sky of today with the clouds of tomorrow. And is it not sometimes the case that troubles anticipated, or viewed from a distance, seem to present a more terrifying appearance than when regarded at close quarters? Indeed, a threatened calamity when confronted by an honest thought has often failed to materialize, and has vanished like a fog before sunshine.

If, then, human courage is able to rise even temporarily somewhat above its fears, how much more truly immune should be the student of Christian Science who has exchanged the superficial comfort of human platitudes for the knowledge of the protection of ever-present divine Love!

This assurance, however, does not absolve the student from the daily study and mental work upon which his own progress and the growth of our beloved Cause so much depend. Rather does it stress the necessity for his ever-increasing efforts. He will find, however, that his own understanding is increased strictly in the measure of his application of it today. Mrs. Eddy has indicated this on page vii of the Preface to "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," where she says, "To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, to-day is big with blessings." Note that she does not say anything about yesterday or tomorrow. In fact, in another of her books, "Miscellaneous Writings," she counsels her students (p. 307), "Never ask for to-morrow: it is enough that divine Love is an ever-present help; and if you wait, never doubting, you will have all you need every moment."
