When a hungry heart petitions the divine Father-Mother God...
"When a hungry heart petitions the divine Father-Mother God for bread, it is not given a stone,—but more grace, obedience, and love." Thus writes Mrs. Eddy in "Miscellaneous Writings" (p. 127). The truth of the above quotation has been demonstrated in my experience, and the messenger that brought the healing balm was Christian Science. While I am deeply grateful for numerous beautiful healings—physical, mental, and moral—during many years, I will relate my first healing, which was a sweet promise of those that have followed.
My earliest recollections are of a hungry heart. When I was a very young child, the inharmonious happenings in the world about me caused me serious concern. Tired, unhappy faces so affected me that I was always hoping that no one would ever be distressed by the expression of my countenance. It seemed to me that all should be harmony and happiness, and I was keenly desirous of helping to bring about this state of affairs. As I grew older, I sought comfort for my troubled thoughts in the Bible and the church; but I did not understand the Bible, nor did the ministers and teachers explain it to my satisfaction. I was often told to pray, but I felt I did not know the true meaning of prayer; and my knowledge of God was so slight that I felt no assurance about anything. I became so dissatisfied that I drifted away from the church.
After a short time I heard of a new religion called "Christian Science." I heard it both praised and ridiculed. When I learned of its textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, explaining it, I procured a copy. The first sentence in the Preface (p. vii), "To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, to-day is big with blessings," held out a hope which grew as I read on and on during leisure moments, and was conscious of more encouragement than I had ever received. I was beginning to understand and to love God. On page 1 of the above-mentioned book is the statement, "Desire is prayer"; so I discovered that already I had been truly praying.
