The Position of a Christian Soldier

While attending a dinner party some years ago, the writer overheard part of a conversation which was taking place at the table. The story which was being told ran something like this. A soldier who was desirous of obtaining a commission was told to go to headquarters, knock on the door, and wait for an answer. He went to the building and knocked on the door. No answer came. He knocked the second time, but still received no answer. Finally, after he had knocked the third time, a gruff voice roared, "Come in." This he did, and walking up to the commanding officer, took his position as a soldier and waited for further orders. The officer shouted, "Take the position of a soldier!" The soldier did not move. He called out the second time, "Take the position of a soldier!" Still the man did not move. And even the third time, when the officer commanded him to take the position of a soldier, he remained the same. He then received his commission.

This little story has many times come to the thought of the writer as an illustration of how we receive the reward of standing for Principle. The soldier knew that he had taken the right position, and nothing could change it. So it is that when we know the truth about God—the all-presence and power of God—and man as God's image, perfect and indestructible, we take our position for Principle, and nothing can change it. The reward of peace, joy, and spiritual bliss is always ours as we take our stand for right and hold to our position as God's witnesses.

The Bible tells us, "having done all, to stand." Daniel's faith could not be shaken, so he was protected and delivered from the den of lions. Christ Jesus refused to yield to the temptation of the devil. When the devil tempted him, he said, "Get thee hence, Satan," and "behold, angels came and ministered unto him."
