In gratitude for what Christian Science has done for me, I send this testimony. On approaching Europe, after traveling for several months in the Far East, I was suddenly attacked by alarming conditions, both in my right ear and also on my right cheek and chin. I became quite deaf in that ear, and I suffered both from a continuous ache and also from shooting pains, and the ear was a good deal swollen. My cheek and chin also become frightfully swollen and extremely painful, and besides these local troubles, I felt exceedingly ill.

I left the ship at Marseilles and hurried on to Cannes, where I knew there were a Christian Science church and practitioners, but unfortunately found I had mislaid my copy of The Christian Science Journal, which contained the needful addresses. The friend with whom I was traveling became wild with fright and would not rest until she had taken me first to a dentist and then to an ear specialist. The former took an X-ray photograph, which showed an abscess at the base of a tooth and going deep into the bone, another abscess in my ear, and a third in my cheek and chin. He then declared that a tooth would have to be extracted, but that my face was in too bad a condition to allow him to do so at the time; that he could not understand what was the cause of my face trouble, and that I must go to an ear specialist for the ear. This specialist said that he also could not account for the state of my face, but that it had nothing to do either with the abscess in the gum or with that in the ear. He said that the latter was very serious indeed, that a patient of his, suffering in the same way, had recently succumbed to the condition; and he begged me to go at once to a nursing home. This I did not do, but started again to look for the Science church, which I eventually found, as well as a most capable and devoted practitioner, to whose loving ministrations and clear expositions of the truth I owe endless thanks.

She succeeded in bringing me surcease from pain almost immediately, while a discharge from the abscess in the cheek started to relieve and lessen it almost at once, with the result that a beautiful healing took place in a very few days, without leaving the permanent scar which the ear specialist told me would be the case if an operation were to be performed. The ear took a few days longer to heal, after which the hearing entirely returned to me, and all discordant symptoms disappeared.
