Sickness, a Dream

On page 11 of "Rudimental Divine Science" Mrs. Eddy makes an arresting statement. She says, "In a moment you may awake from a night-dream; just so you can awake from the dream of sickness; but the demonstration of the Science of Mind-healing by no means rests on the strength of human belief." Sickness, a dream? That is what Christian Science teaches and enables its students to prove. But, as is pointed out in the words quoted above, mere belief will not empower them to break the dream; enlightened understanding is required to do that, understanding gained through prayerful study of Christian Science.

How does Christian Science reason on this important subject? It declares that God is infinite and perfect Mind, that He is the sole creator, and that spiritual man and the universe are His perfect creation. This means that man, whose creator is God, is never inharmonious, never suffers from sickness, never sins, since inharmony, disease, and sin are unreal, not being of God, perfect Mind. It is because sickness is unreal that it is termed in Christian Science an illusion or dream.

It will be remembered that Christ Jesus referred to death as a sleep. When besought by Jairus, a ruler of the synagogue, to heal his little daughter, who lay "at the point of death," Jesus went to Jairus' house. On the way there he was informed that the damsel had died; but his assuring words to Jairus were, "Be not afraid, only believe." Then, on his arrival, he uttered the words, "Why make ye this ado, and weep? the damsel is not dead, but sleepeth;" and taking her by the hand he told her to arise. This the damsel did. The Master had demonstrated death to be a sleep.
