Signs of the Times

Topic: Prayer and Faith

[S. J. Duncan-Clark, in the Daily News, Chicago, Illinois]

The woman's page of the Daily News sank a shaft into a rich mine of human experience when it called for letters on the topic of beautifully answered prayers. The response, I am told, surprised the editors in both its volume and quality. Unquestionably it has proved deeply interesting to a multitude of readers. ...

The trouble with many of us who believe in prayer is that we do not believe in it enough. The possibilities that lie in this means of fellowship with God are infinite, and ninety-nine per cent of the blunders and failures that discredit our religion in its personal expression and in its attempted service for mankind are the result of plans and action that do not originate from sincere and earnest prayer. We organize societies and committees, we draft declarations and programs, we raise funds and spend them—we are tremendously busy. But much of our activity is fruitless because we do not take time to seek the guidance and the spiritual power that alone could make it effective. The restoration of prayer to a major place in our planning and working alone will ensure that wisdom and that constant replenishment with energy by which the foundations of the kingdom of God may be laid securely in human life.
