On February 11 and 12, 1861, Abraham Lincoln, on his way to be inaugurated President at Washington, visited Indianapolis. ... He arrived at five o'clock in the afternoon of eleventh, and made a speech from the platform of the railway car when the train stopped at West Washington Street.

"I am not planning to make a speech. I will only say that for the salvation of the Union there needs but one single thing: the hearts of a people like yours. When the people rise in mass in behalf of the Union, the gates of hell shall not prevail against them.
