The Key

A mendicant for love, I stood
Outside heaven's gate;
Oh, give me love! I cried,
Early and late.

I got no dole for all my plea—
Men passed me by;
They sought Love's treasure for themselves,
Even as I.

They bought, and sold, and trafficked in
The precious stuff,
But none had love to give away;
None had enough.

An angel touched me, where I stood
Disconsolate:
Not being loved but loving
Opens the gate!
