Extracts from Reports of Christian Science Committees on Publication

Jamaica, British West Indies.

During the past year the press has published many letters regarding Christian Science which have needed correction. While the newspapers have not seemed averse to publishing articles derogatory to Christian Science, they have been generous in allotting space for our replies.

This discussion has brought the teachings of Christian Science to the notice of many who had previously been entirely ignorant of our activities; and it has also served to correct many false impressions with regard to the operation of this teaching. We have been reliably informed that long-unused Bible have been brought out of seclusion for the purpose of investigating the authenticity of Biblical quotations used during this discussion. This cannot fail to awaken general thought to a realization that Christian Science is the rediscovery of the religion of love which our Master taught and practiced.

For several months the Gleaner published extracts from our Lesson-Sermons in the Christian Science Quarterly, but because many other churches demanded space to present their teachings, the editor found it necessary to restrict all churches to space required for church notices.

The lecture given in January was well attended, the hall being filled to capacity, showing the necessity for securing a larger auditorium for our forthcoming lectures.

During the past year Christian Science Society of Kingston was recognized by The Christian Science Board of Directors as a branch church.

Throughout the island there is a marked increase of interest in Christian Science; also students throughout the island are becoming more active in their endeavors to make it possible for others to learn more about this truth in their immediate vicinities.

A constantly increasing attendance at the church services shows a necessity for preparations for additional seating accommodations. At many of the services the church is filled to capacity.

It is most important, in view of the statements published in the press, regarding the healing power of Christian Science, that all Christian Scientists work sincerely and prayerfully to prove that this truth does what we claim for it.

Our relations with the press and the public are becoming more and more friendly. There has been no occasion to reply to attacks in the newspapers. The work of the Committee on Publication and the Assistants during the last months has been one of co-operation and development rather than of rectification. It has been noticed that the public is now taking a greater interest in our movement. For example, some journalists attended the showing of the film recording the building of the new Publishing House and mentioned this in appreciative terms in their newspapers. Articles from The Christian Science Monitor have been quoted several times. At Neuchätel, a newspaper commented on a talk that had been prepared with the help of a series of articles in the Monitor. In Geneva, a newspaper reported an article dealing with the Austrian question. Two Montreux newspapers printed a good part of the report of the Annual Meeting of The Mother Church.

Great consideration and respect were shown toward Christian Science treatment, in a special case, by a doctor and some university professors.
