"Key to the Scriptures"
"Truth has furnished the key to the kingdom, and with this key Christian Science has opened the door of the human understanding," writes Mary Baker Eddy on page 99 of her textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." Many beautiful and well-loved passages of Scripture were obscure until Christian Science revealed their deep spiritual meaning, the healing truth that is hidden to the so-called material mind.
A student of Christian Science, while serving the public in a business section of a large city, had great cause for rejoicing that Science and Health does indeed give us the "key" to the Scriptures, for with this key a Bible passage was made available and understandable at a time when thought needed to be lifted above the din of error.
On all sides the voice of the carnal mind was loudly proclaiming that unemployment, depression, bad business, bank failures, fear, despair, panic, and discouragement were real, and that mankind was a victim of these conditions of thought. Each day the student worked earnestly and prayerfully to keep her thought above these arguments and to dwell on the allness of God. Many helpful passage in the Bible, the textbook, our Leader's other writings, and our periodicals were found and passed on to others in need of encouragement. Yet, helpful though these passages proved to be, the time came when the student realized that a greater effort needed to be made to gain a still clearer view of the unreality of these evils and a larger, more confident realization of the presence, power, and allness of God, good; and so she turned humbly to God for help.
